Derek Jeter Gets Into the Book Publishing Game

It’s not every day that I get to write about baseball here on the Best Book Printing Blog. In fact, I fear I may never get to do so again, and thusly my beloved Atlanta Braves will be forever off limits for my list of blog topics.

Today, though, is a very special day. It’s time to tell the story of baseball book publishing; a story not often told.

Long-time New York Yankee Derek Jeter will launch Jeter Publishing in partnership with Simon & Schuster, according to The New York Times. This is one of the first indications of what Jeter will do after his playing days are over, as his retirement is expected sooner rather than later. However, he hasn’t yet said when he plans to leave the game, and he recently signed a one-year contract with the Yankees that covers the 2014 season.

“I’ve always had an interest in business, and my interest in business has really expanded over the years,” Jeter told the Times. “And I have an interest in content. So this gives me the opportunity to really combine the two. And it gives me the opportunity to curate and share interesting stories and share content with the public.”

Jeter’s publishing venture has been quietly in the works for some time, and the gears already are in motion to begin producing his first projects. The Times reports the imprint will include biographies, middle-grade fiction and children’s books, among others. One of the first will be a “Derek Jeter guide to baseball” – and as that title may indicate, he plans to play an active role in choosing which books he releases and will even be involved in choosing titles and cover art.

Again, I’d like to thank Mr. Jeter for allowing me to write a little baseball in a book printing blog, even if it does have to be indirectly about the Yankees. As far as I’m concerned the ball is now in Chipper Jones’ court to start an imprint so I can bring a little hometown Braves pride in here, too.
