Not too long ago we took a look at the best crowdsourcing website for authors, comparing Kickstarter, Indiegogo and the books-only site Pubslush. Hivewire’s new infographic exploring the differences between Kickstarter and Indiegogo caught our attention because it cites historical data from the two platforms.
While the data is from all types of projects on the sites, it provides some useful information for writers thinking about creating their own project. For instance, while Kickstarter’s success rate of 43.4 percent looks very good compared to Indiegogo’s 9.8 percent, the writers point out that this doesn’t tell the whole story. Indiegogo offers flex funding, meaning project creators can keep the money they raise even if they do not meet the goal they’ve set (this is not the case on Kickstarter). With flex funding, you’ll still have money to put toward printing your book even if you did not raise all of your intended amount.
