We’ve been fairly vocal about our support of Kickstarter projects, particularly since we get to print some of them. It’s pretty awesome to see someone’s book or magazine go from the idea stage to a finished printed product. And the times we get to be part of that process by printing the book is even more awesome!
Until now, most of the printing projects on Kickstarter were in the Publishing category of the site, but a new category – Journalism – will now also be a place to find the best new upcoming print magazines and books.
Here’s what Kickstarter says prompted the creation of the new category:
It’d be a vast understatement to say the world of journalism is currently experiencing a lot of change. To us, that means it’s more important than ever to make sure journalists have the tools and resources to try new things — whether they’re professionals looking for innovative ways of funding and sharing their work, or ordinary folks with a hunger to tell the stories around them. Together, we’ve seen people launch terrific podcasts, magazines, works of photojournalism, websites, and striking tools for learning about the world. We’re sure we’ll be seeing even more amazing things to come.
As the blurb touches on, journalism projects are nothing new to the site, but it’s nice to see them all grouped together in one place. Additionally, not all projects will be print (they range from online material to podcasts), but we are particularly excited to see what new print projects will emerge!
Finally, the same blog the above blurb is taken from announces that the Guardian has partnered with Kickstarter to start a curated page to highlight interesting projects in the new category.
“At the Guardian, we’re excited by new forms and models of journalism, and Kickstarter’s focus on the fourth estate is something we’re happy to support by helping pick the projects that we think look most interesting,” said Casper Llewellyn Smith, Head of Culture at the Guardian.
Really hoping to see some great journalism projects coming out of this!]]>
